Adam Update

| | Comments (0)

Great news via email from Deb, Adam's Mom.

Adam's ANC was up to 280 today. Isn't that great
news? Dr. Guinan thinks he's going to be engrafting
soon. It's only day +12, so we are very pleased. He's
also feeling much better, no fevers in a few days.

Nurses were not able to go to their respective homes due to the blizzard. We gather that five of the 6W nurses slept in one room of the next door hotel, and others in empty rooms at 7East and the CAT/CR in the hospital.

Dr. Jordan Orange - NBC News

| | Comments (0)

A story from NBC News uses Dr. Orange's words:

"A person with primary immune deficiency is unable to protect themselves from even common infections," said Dr. Jordan Orange, a pediatric immunologist.
"What we're doing with this treatment is replacing that missing part of her immune system," Orange said.

Dr. Jordan Orange found NEMO, Andy's primary immune deficiency. He's our very good friend and the best doctor we've ever met (and we've met plenty).

Find articles in this blog about Dr. Orange here and his website at CHOP (Children's Hospital Philadelphia) here.

Sarah Gilbert from blobbingbaby.bom writes the following:

Remember all our discussions about parents who have babies in the hopes their stem cells will cure a terrible disease in their older child? Well, once such family is the Trevinos, and their son, Andy, was diagnosed with NEMO deficiency - a rare genetic immune disorder. The Trevinos are from Mexico, but Andy is being treated at Children’s Hospital Boston. His little sister Sofia is providing stem cells that can cure him, but he still has a long road ahead.
Andres Trevino, Andy’s papa, has started a web site that is centered around fundraising for Andy’s treatment, and for the Andy Fund to search for a cure. We are all sobbing over the Andy Blog, with happy photos of the nurse of the day. His dad calls it his “extreme parenthood” blog.

Greg Allen from daddytypes.com blog writes the following:

Talk about extreme parenting. Andres Trevino and his wife are from Mexico, but they have been basically living in Boston for the last few years after their 5-year old son, Andy began treatment at The Children's Hospital for a rare genetic immune disorder. They're preparing for a stem cell transplant, the only treatment currently available with a chance to cure the disease.

The Andy Blog is Andres' way of documenting his family's situation and his son's treatments, of communicating it to people back home, and of raising money for both Andy's treatment and The Andy Fund, a genetics research grant set up in his name. He's been at it for five years.

Why is Kelli running?

| | Comments (0)

I have always been somewhat of a runner since I was a little girl. My first race I ever ran was a 3 mile road race on the 4th of July when I was 9 years old. I don't know why, but I just always liked to run. Now that I am older, I enjoy running because it's not only a great way to keep in shape, but it also helps me relieve stress and clear my head.
A few years ago, I injured my knees playing soccer. After 2 ACL replacement surgeries, my doctor asked me what my "physical" goals were. I told him, I didn't mind if I didn't play soccer again, but I would really love to run the Boston Marathon someday. He laughed at me and said that this probably wouldn't happen, nor should it. That is when I decided I would run the Boston Marathon. So about 5 years later, I ran my first marathon (2002), and have been running them ever since. I have only done the Boston Marathon because you just can't beat that crowd....they are the one's that carry me through the entire race!
I want to run for Children'sHospital for so many reasons. For starters, it is the place that I received my "new knees" that I have been running on for years. But more importantly, I am a nurse there. I work on the Bone Marrow Transplant floor, and see the bravest, strongest kids running their own marathons every day. There are some days that I leave work wishing I could do more, so I thought that running for Children's Hospital and honoring one of those brave and amazing kids (Andy), would be the "little more" that I could do. In years past, I have never run for Children's Hospital, but the kids that I haved cared for, have always run with me... I think of them throughout the entire race.

We used one of the examination gloves, filled with water, used the patient food fridge and a few hours later we got a hand ice sculpture.

Now we're trying to make other ice sculptures from spiderman mask, urinal, water bottle, cups.

Roberta Whalen, Tutor & Sarah Orlov from Newton Public Schools visited Andy today.

Roberta brought books, projects and software for Andy and he did great, much better than a day before when he was not feeling well.

I talked to Sarah & Roberta regarding the hospital's tutor program which may contribute to Andy's total tutoring time during the week. We're trying to find someone here that could be available when Roberta's tutoring is delayed due to medical treatments or when Andy is not feeling well.

The best solution for this issue is near... Andy will feel better soon.
