Incredible video found by Parker's dad about a neutrophil chasing a bacteria.

I learned yesterday that Dana Farber Cancer Institute has 42,000 thousand potential bone marrow stem cell donors registered at their donor center. That's 14 times Mexico's registry... They already have buccal swab tests available for HLA typing. That means that if you want to become a donor you just have to open your mouth for a moment and with a little brush cells are obtained for testing... The price for the buccal swab test is around $55 dollars per person.
They did a "Bermuda Outpost" a couple of years ago trying to find compatible donors for a patient for Bermuda and they are open to doing the same in other countries.
They estimate that there are more than 10 million stem cell donors and cord blood units available worldwide.

Five hundred and fifty five days ago Andy received Sofia's stem cells at room 613 / Six West, the stem cell transplant unit of Children's Hospital Boston.

During Andy's last visit to the clinic about a month ago a blood sample was taken to check the percentage of cells in his blood stream that come from the donated stem cells now living in his bone marrow. And today I received an email from Dr. Sachs with the following results:

T cells (CD3) = 100% donor
Granulocytes (CD15) = 100% donor
B cells (CD19) = 99% donor

He's 100% donor.

In other words. Sofia's stem cells are producing the cells Andy needs to fight virus and bacteria. Andy lives IMMUNE.

FAMILY SUPPORT - COURAGE - HOPE - ENDURANCE - NEW LIFE

Sometimes its a matter of timing....Sometimes its a matter of two failed approaches coming together with a twist that makes them right.. Many others have contributed to our success. As Newton said, ".... I have stood in the shoulders of giants".

Children's Hospital Boston is a place with very high ceilings.

We joined the PFFAC in April 2005, and represent two types of minorities at Dana-Farber and Children's Hospital: Spanish-speaking families and patients with rare diseases.
Our first child, Andy Treviño, was born on May 15, 1999. Only 48 hours into his life, Andy got a fever that proved to be the first shot fired by his immune system in a potentially deadly battle.
We moved to Boston from tour native Mexico and had a second child who gave part of herself so Andy could have a chance at survival.
Children's Hospital Boston researchers Raif Geha, MD, Jordan Orange, MD, Francisco Bonilla, MD, PhD, Steven Gellis, MD, and Lynda Schneider, MD, discovered that Andy had a mutation on the Nuclear Factor Kappa B Essential Modifier (NEMO) gene. This mutation led to a life-threatening condition known as Primary Immune Deficiency (PID), which caused Andy's immune system to fail.
Knowing the exact genetic mutation gave us several options to treat Andy:
1) Maintain: Use antibiotics and antivirals for life to protect him from infections and give regular IV infusions of gamma globulin (antibodies obtained from blood donors).
2) Enhance: Boost Andy's immune response with medications, proteins and regular IV infusions of gamma globulin.
3) Replace: A stem cell transplant (also called a bone marrow transplant) to give Andy a new immune system.

We talk about our experience as an "extreme parenthood adventure": More than 650 days of hospitalization and a constant battle against life threatening infections.
A stem cell transplant substituted the NEMO gene, but it may also have been a "problem exchange," meaning that the immune deficiency may be fixed by transplantation, but the chemo used in the procedure may damage other organs.
We quickly decided that if we were going to go through IVF, we wanted to be as certain as possible that our new child would be a genetic match to Andy and wouldn't have NEMO. The NEMO gene is passed on by the mother, but only males can get the resulting PID. And since there's a 50 percent chance that any male born to a mother with the NEMO gene will get the disease, we decided that our best option was to have a girl.
To do so, we went to a fertility clinic for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), a process that involves the removal of a single cell from a fertilized embryo to test it for genetic diseases.
Sofia's arrival and health meant we could move ahead with Andy's stem cell transplant. We turned to Dr. Sung-Yun Pai, a stem cell transplant specialist with Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Care, to do the procedure.
Sofia donated umbilical cord and bone marrow stem cells for her brother's stem cell transplant in October 29, 2004. Her stem cells substituted Andy's immune system.
Life goes on for us. After so many years here, we have decided to move permanently to Massachusetts. Andy's immune system, which is actually Sofia's immune system, is working well now. Andy lives immune!

I received an email from Matt Cyr today. Matt Cyr is the Manager of Public Affairs @ Children's Hospital Boston. He's the editor of Dream Magazine that had the article about Andy & Sofia last summer.

The triplets turn 6 months old!

I blogged about the babies arrival here.

Cloning Efforts Resume in U.S.

Marking the re-entry of U.S. researchers into a controversial medical endeavor, two American research teams say they will resume efforts to clone human embryos.

Officials at the University of California, San Francisco said Friday that they would immediately resume a cloning program, with the goal of creating new stem-cell lines that can be used to model genetic diseases.

The renewed efforts to use cloning as a source of stem cells come on the heels of a scientific fraud in which a South Korean team's claims to have perfected so-called therapeutic cloning were found to have been faked.

Separately, executives with Advanced Cell Technology Inc., of Alameda, Calif., said they plan to announce their cloning plans soon. Advanced Cell's vice president of research, Robert Lanza, said the company is recruiting female egg donors and is interested in creating tailored transplant treatments.

Other institutions, notably Harvard University, are seeking to conduct similar studies, although plans by researchers affiliated with the school's stem-cell institute have been on hold for more than a year because of extensive ethics reviews and administrative delays.

The cloning of embryos is controversial because some view it as the creation of human life for the sole purpose of scientific research. Advocates say cloning may provide a pathway for making customized stem cells useful in medical research.

Cloning programs are moving forward thanks to state laws put in place to protect and regulate the research. In California, voters also approved a ballot measure designed to provide as much as $3 billion in stem-cell funding over 10 years.

UCSF began its cloning effort in 1999, but the program ran into trouble in 2001 after UCSF lost its top stem-cell researcher, Roger Pedersen, who took a job in the United Kingdom, citing a hostile atmosphere in the U.S. Advanced Cell's cloning effort was last active in 2003, Dr. Lanza said, and stopped because of political pressures and because the company lost its source of human eggs.

UCSF scientists are attempting to use controversial cloning techniques to generate human embryonic stem cell lines. At least half a dozen other groups in the United States and abroad also are getting involved in such work, signaling a renewed global push to achieve what experimenters in South Korea falsely claimed to have done last year. The ultimate goal ranks among the most important in experimental biology: to create "patient-specific" stem cell lines to study how diseases develop and to make transplant cells matched to a patient's own genes, thus avoiding the usual risks of rejection. The first of the donated eggs are expected to be transferred to the researchers as early as Monday.

Scientists said they had no way to predict how long it might take to complete the experiments or what chance they have to succeed.
Researchers plan to use a cloning method known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT.

Some politicians -- including President Bush -- want to outlaw the research on the grounds that it could encourage illicit attempts at reproductive cloning. And besides long-standing religious objections, pro-choice advocates worry about the potential harm to women who provide the human eggs involved.

Separate teams are pursuing essentially the same goal as UCSF, including scientists at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Cambridge, Mass. A formal announcement is expected within a few weeks.

Some religious analysts say all human cloning is inherently immoral.

"What is ultimately being proposed in therapeutic cloning is the generation of very young beings that are human so that desirable cells may be removed from them, thereby always destroying those young human beings," said the Rev. Tad Pacholczyk, director of education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia.

It consists of the following:
1) Infrared light source - The light source emits a harmless, near-infrared light reflected back to the surface from the tissue surrounding the vein, while no light is reflected back from the blood inside the vessel.
2) Digital video camera - The digital video camera captures the near-infrared light reflected back from the patient.
3) Image processing unit - The microprocessor adds contrast and projects this image back on the skin in their actual location.

The first embryonic stem cells were isolated in mice in 1981. But it wasn't until 1998 that researchers managed to derive stem cells from human embryos. That kicked into full gear an ethical debate that continues to this day. Here's a look at key moments in the controversy so far:

November 1995: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin isolate the first embryonic stem cells in primates -- rhesus macaque monkeys. The research shows it's possible to derive embryonic stem cells from primates, including humans.

January 1998: Scientist and entrepreneur Richard Seed announces plans to open a human-cloning clinic. The clinic would offer infertile couples the option of cloning themselves if there were no accepted medical treatments that could help them have a baby. Seed's plan never comes to fruition, but the announcement spurs a debate on the ethics of human cloning.

Nov. 5, 1998: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin and Johns Hopkins University report isolating human embryonic stem cells. The cells have the potential to become any type of cell in the body and might one day be used to replace damaged or cancerous cells. But the process is controversial: One team derived their stem cells from the tissue of aborted fetuses; the other from embryos created in the laboratory for couples seeking to get pregnant by in vitro fertilization.

Aug. 23, 2000: The National Institutes of Health issue guidelines that allow federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. Former President Bill Clinton supports the guidelines.

February 2001: The month after taking office, President George W. Bush requests a review of the NIH funding guidelines and puts a hold on federal funds for stem-cell research.

July 18, 2001: Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), a vocal abortion opponent, call for limited federal funding for stem-cell research.

July 29, 2001: House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and other Republican House leaders come out in opposition to federal funding for research.

Aug. 9, 2001: President Bush announces his decision to limit funding to a few dozen lines of embryonic stem cells in existence at that date. Many of the approved lines later prove to be contaminated, and some contain genetic mutations, making them unsuitable for research.

Nov. 25, 2001: Scientists at Advanced Cell Technology in Massachusetts claim to have cloned a human embryo. However, the evidence proves controversial and not conclusive.

Feb. 12, 2004: South Korean scientists announce the world's first successfully cloned human embryo. Unlike other past cloning claims, the scientists report their work in a prestigious, peer-reviewed journal, Science. The embryos were cloned not for reproductive purposes but as a source of stem cells. The news reopens the contentious debate over somatic-cell nuclear transfer, which is sometimes referred to as therapeutic cloning. Scientists say cloning offers a unique way to produce cells that may someday be used to treat diseases. But critics argue that any form of cloning is morally repugnant and should be banned.

June 25, 2004: New Jersey legislators pass a state budget that includes $9.5 million for a newly chartered Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. The move makes New Jersey the first state to fund research on stem cells, including those derived from human embryos.

Nov. 2, 2004: California voters approve Proposition 71, which authorizes the state to spend $3 billion on embryonic stem-cell research over 10 years. The measure is a response to federal funding restrictions put into place in 2001. It puts California ahead of the federal government and many other nations in promoting the research.

May 19, 2005: The same South Korean researchers who reported cloning a human embryo in 2004 announce another milestone: They say they've created a streamlined process that uses far fewer human eggs to produce usable embryonic stem cells -- a major step toward mass production. Their work is published in Science.

May 24, 2005: The House passes a bill that would ease President Bush's restrictions on federal funding for stem-cell research.

May 26, 2005: A version of the bill passed in the House is introduced in the Senate. Among Senate sponsors of the bill are two prominent Republicans, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. Their support comes despite President Bush's promise to veto any legislation lifting the restrictions on funding he put in place on Aug. 9, 2001.

May 31, 2005: Connecticut approves $100 million in funding for adult and embryonic stem-cell research over the next 10 years.

July 13, 2005: Bypassing the Illinois state legislature, Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich creates a stem-cell research institute by executive order. The institute will be funded through a line item in the state budget that gives the Public Health Department $10 million to fund research.

July 29, 2005: In defiance of President Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) announces his support of legislation to ease federal funding restrictions for stem-cell research.

Sept. 19, 2005: Scientists in California report that injecting human neural stem cells appeared to repair spinal cords in mice. The therapy helped partially paralyzed mice walk again.

Sept. 21, 2005: Advocates of embryonic stem-cell research in Florida propose a ballot initiative that would give $200 million in state funds toward the research over the next decade. Two days later, opponents of the science file a petition to amend Florida's state constitution to ban state funding for embryonic stem-cell research.

Nov. 11, 2005: University of Pittsburgh researcher Gerald Schatten alerts editors at the journal Science that there may have been ethical lapses in a landmark cloning paper published in February 2004. In that paper, South Korean scientists claimed they had made an embryonic stem-cell line from a cloned human embryo. Schatten alleged that some of the egg donors in that study had been paid, and some were junior colleagues of the lead author, Hwang Woo Suk. Schatten also says there were minor technical errors in one of the tables in a 2005 paper by the same group, a paper on which Schatten was senior author. In that paper, Hwang et. al. claimed to have made 11 cloned stem-cell lines. At the same time, Schatten severs his collaboration with the South Korean scientists.

Dec. 15, 2005: Hwang admits that there are serious errors in his 2005 paper in Science and asks the journal to retract it. The admission comes three weeks after Hwang apologized for ethical lapses and stepped down as head of the stem-cell program at Seoul National University.

Dec. 29, 2005: The Seoul National University investigation concludes all of the data was fabricated in the 2005 paper that Hwang's team published in Science.

Jan. 10, 2006: The Seoul National University investigation concludes that the landmark 2004 paper was fabricated as well. Two days later, Science formally retracts both Hwang papers.

Old Boy Victor Treviño S'58 is a St. John's Northwestern Military Academy Distinguished Counselor, recipient of the Honored Old Boy of the Year Award, the Academy's highest alumni honor, and also served on the Academy Board of Trustees. He is a very highly respected businessman in Mexico and an inspiring symbol of St. John's Northwestern Military Academy's values in his home country.
On January 27, 2006, fifty years after being a new boy at St. John's, Mr. Treviño honors us by returning to the Noble Victory Memorial Chapel to address our Corps of Cadets. His powerful message reinforces that being an SJNMA cadet and alumnus means belonging to something bigger and better than oneself, being a part of a unique fraternity of friends thoughout one's lifetime: Amici, Usque, ad Finem. He illustrates how the adages of our Beacon, 'Play the Game', 'The Game's Not Over until the Whistle Blows', 'Carry On', and 'Don't Be a Mollycoddle' are principles that have guided him thoughout his life and that will guide all St. John's Northwestern cadets.
